Working with a designer can impact your business positively in many ways. Design can help differentiate your business from the competition, appeal to your target audience or achieve sales goals. In short, design can help turn your vision into reality.
When collaborating with a designer, there are a few things to keep in mind to make the collaboration as effective and smooth as possible. Of course, every designer has their own unique workflow, but there are some things you should always consider when working with a design professional.
Communicate the goal of your project clearly
As much as we as designers enjoy our creative freedom, mind reading unfortunately is not one of our strengths. In order to guarantee a satisfactory and successful result, we need to understand all requirements of the project like conditions and the intended final use of the desired design as precisely as possible, preferably before the project starts.
Be as specific as possible with feedback
When it comes to feedback, it's important to be as precise as possible. The more detailed you are with your feedback, the easier it is for the designer to know what changes need to be made. If something doesn't feel right, make sure you explain exactly why. If several people are involved in the project, there should always be a designated contact who communicates with the designer to avoid conflicting comments and misunderstandings.
Provide materials well in advance of the project start
The more organized you are as a client, the smoother the design process will be and the more successful the outcome of the project. Delays in providing resources, such as images, text or other design elements, are not only time-related, but they can also negatively affect the creative process of the designer and thus the end result.
Be open and respectful
We designers love the creative interaction with our customers, your input, knowledge and insights are just as important as our expertise to successfully implement a project. A respectful basis of communication is always the first step to a successful project, in my experience.
